What are answer weights and how they affect your quiz results

Every matching answer adds points to a product and the product with the most points comes first. Answer weights let you make one answer count for more.

How answer weights affect your quiz results

When your product recommendations are worked out based on matching products to answers, products that match more of a customer’s answers appear higher in their quiz results. The match score on each product shows how closely it matches their responses.

If some answers matter more than others, you can use answer weights to give those answers more influence over the order of recommendations.

If you haven’t connected products to your quiz answers yet, start with Product Matching.

How default matching works

By default, each product-matching answer has a weight of 100 points. A product collects points whenever the customer selects an answer connected to it.

A customer picked four answers, each worth 100 points. Hydrating Cream matches three answers and has 300 points, Calming Serum matches two and has 200, Daily Lotion matches one and has 100, so they are shown in that order.

Because each answer contributes the same number of points, Hydrating Cream appears first.

When products have the same total points, Sorting Priority determines their order. Learn more in How can I sort quiz results?.

Give important answers more influence

You may want one answer to have more influence than the others.

For example, a customer selects Sensitive skin. You want the Calming Serum connected to that answer to rank higher, even though Hydrating Cream matches more of their other answers.

Increasing the Sensitive skin answer weight from 100 to 500 changes the totals:

The same customer and products, but the Sensitive skin answer is set to 500 points. Calming Serum now has 600 points and moves to the top, above Hydrating Cream with 300 points, even though it matches fewer answers.

Calming Serum now appears first.

Changing answer weights does not change the displayed match score. A product can therefore rank above another product with a higher match score because it matches an answer you have given more weight.

Change an answer’s weight

  1. Open the Products tab in the quiz editor.

  2. Select the answer you want to adjust.

  3. Untick Use default answer weight.

  4. Enter the new weight. You can increase it up to 10,000.

A higher weight gives the answer more influence. A lower weight gives it less influence. The final order depends on the total points each product collects from the customer’s selected answers.

Test several answer combinations after making changes to check that your recommendations appear in the intended order.

Budget questions work differently

Budget questions filter the products matched by your other questions, keeping those within the customer’s selected price ranges.

They do not add products, have answer weights or contribute to the match score.

Answer weights in Dynamic Content Blocks

Answer weights can also influence which variant of a Dynamic Content Block appears on the Results Page.

This uses a separate scoring setup. See Answer Weights in Dynamic Content Blocks for details.
