Scores are a versatile feature in Dynamic Content Blocks that help you enhance quizzes by assigning values to answers, enabling tailored outcomes.

What Are Scores and How Do They Work?

Lantern offers two methods to display results: either the default product recommendations or Dynamic Content Blocks, but you can also use both. In default product recommendations, products are recommended based on their match scores, which are calculated as a value or percentage out of the total number of questions or total score coming from all questions. If a product was a match for answers selected in 8 out of 10 questions, that product would have an 80% match score or 8/10. To learn more about product matching and all options available, please check our help article.

In contrast, Dynamic Content Blocks assign points to answers, not directly to products. Variants in Dynamic Content Blocks compete against each other based on the scores assigned to matching answers. Each variant can include specific products, images, and personalized text. If only one variant is created, it will always appear on the results page, regardless of the answers selected.

Scores serve two primary purposes

  1. Tracking Progress or Preferences: Scores allow you to quantify user preferences or characteristics. Each Variant in a Dynamic Content Block will get a total score coming from answers that match it and the one with the highest score will be the most qualified to be displayed to your customers.

  2. Customizing Results: After calculating the total score, you can dynamically display its content or recommend products that align with the user’s unique responses. For a variant that is chosen based on the score received from answers that match it, you can customize any of its content or products. Please check out our help article to learn more about customizing your Dynamic Content blocks.

Using Scores in Dynamic Content Blocks

In Dynamic Content Blocks, the default weight is 100, and it can be adjusted to any value between -1000 and 1000. Negative weights can ensure certain answers reduce the relevance of specific variants or exclude them entirely, offering precise control over outcomes. This is mostly useful when you want to include all answers in the quiz instead of selecting just certain ones to match with variants. This can be more useful when your quiz taker’s results depend on a total score they would get from going through your quiz, such as their pet’s activity level, where all answers are important to be considered.

In contrast to default results, where all answers from all questions are considered to compute the best-fitted products on the results page, with Dynamic Content Blocks, you can choose for each set of results (basically each variant) what answers are relevant to consider. If you want to show a variant only to people who have a cat, in a quiz where they can choose different paths based on their pet, you can only select the answers relevant to a cat and include them in that variant. If anyone takes that specific path, that will be the only variant accumulating the highest total score and be displayed in the end on the results page. In this case, you won’t need to assign negative scores to answers related to dog owners since those answers will never be a match for variants that are not specifically for dog owners.

Score-Based Quiz Results

Using Dynamic Content Blocks, you can create quizzes where results are based on total scores. Variants compete to determine the most relevant outcomes based on the scores assigned to user answers. For example, scores can categorize users into ranges like low, medium, and high to provide personalized recommendations or information. This is achieved using the "[score]" variable, which dynamically selects the appropriate content block based on total scores. For more details, check out our Score-Based Quiz Results article.

Practical Tips for Using Scores Effectively

  1. Define Clear Goals: Decide what you want the scores to achieve, whether it’s recommending products, categorizing users, or something else.

  2. Keep It Intuitive: Ensure the scoring system aligns with the quiz’s purpose and is easy for users to navigate.

  3. Test Scenarios: Run tests with various answer combinations to verify that the scores yield the desired results.

By understanding and implementing scores effectively in Dynamic Content Blocks, you can unlock a powerful tool for creating engaging, personalized, and impactful quizzes.
