If you already have your quiz in a spreadsheet, you don't have to type it into the Quiz Builder question by question. Import the spreadsheet instead: Lantern creates the questions and their answers, connects the products each answer recommends, and sets each answer's weight. It's made for big quizzes, like a list of every dog breed, hundreds of zip codes, or a product range you've already mapped to answers in Excel.
The import adds questions to the quiz you have open, so the design you've already set up stays as it is.
Set up your spreadsheet
Start from the template: open your quiz in the Quiz Builder, click Add Page, select Import from a Spreadsheet and click Download template. It has two example questions you can overwrite.
Each row is one answer. The first row holds the column names, and the columns can be in any order:
Question (required): the question as your customers will read it. Rows with the same question text become one question, with one answer per row.
Type: single (customers pick one answer), multiple (customers pick several), dropdown or dropdown multiple. Leave it empty for single. Only the question's first row is read.
Answer (required): the answer text.
Products: the products this answer recommends. Use each product's handle, its SKU or its product page URL, and separate several products with a | (vertical bar), for example night-cream | day-cream.
Weight: how strongly this answer counts toward its products, as a whole number from 0 to 10000. Leave it empty for the default of 100.
Here's what three rows of the template look like:
Question,Type,Answer,Products,Weight What's your skin type?,single,Dry,hydrating-cream | night-balm, What's your skin type?,single,Oily,clarifying-gel, Which concerns do you want to work on?,multiple,Fine lines,retinol-serum,200
If the same answer appears on two rows of the same question, its products are added together, so you can also list one product per row.
Find a product's handle
The handle is the last part of the product's web address. For yourstore.com/products/night-cream, it's night-cream. You can also find it in your Shopify admin: go to Products, open the product and look under Search engine listing. Copying the whole product page URL into the spreadsheet works too.
A SKU works when exactly one product in your store has it. If two products share a SKU, use their handles instead.
Import the spreadsheet
In Excel, choose File > Save As and pick CSV UTF-8. In Google Sheets, choose File > Download > Comma-separated values (.csv).
Open your quiz in the Quiz Builder and click Add Page in the left-hand side menu.
Select Import from a Spreadsheet.
Click Choose a CSV file, or drop the file onto the box.
Check the preview, then click Import. The button shows how many questions it's about to add.
The new questions are added after your existing ones, before the optin page if your quiz ends with one, and the Quiz Builder opens the first of them.
Check the preview
Nothing is added to your quiz until you click Import. The preview lists each question with its type and answers, and how many of your products were found. It also warns you about:
Products that weren't found: no product in your store has that handle or SKU. The answers are still imported, just without those products. Fix the file and choose it again, or connect the products later.
Rows that were skipped: a row needs both a question and an answer. The warning gives the row number as it appears in your spreadsheet.
Types or weights that couldn't be read: the question is imported as a single choice question, or the answer gets the default weight.
After the import
The imported questions are ordinary questions, so you can edit them like any other. Like every change in the Quiz Builder, they're saved to your draft and go live when you publish the quiz. A few things to know:
The products you imported are added to the quiz's Products page, where you can see and change which answers recommend them. Product Matching explains how answers and products work together.
The weight is set per answer and counts the same for every product connected to that answer. What are answer weights? explains how weights change the order of your results.
Images, Logic Jumps and Dynamic Content Blocks aren't part of the spreadsheet. Add them in the Quiz Builder after the import.
Dropdown questions are explained in Dropdown answers. Turn on Searchable for long lists.
If your plan limits how many questions a quiz can have, you'll be asked to upgrade before importing more than that.
Build the whole quiz from a file with Claude or ChatGPT
If your file has more than questions and answers, for example which question comes next after each answer, or result text for each combination, the Lantern assistant can build it for you. Connect Lantern to Claude or ChatGPT by following Connect Lantern's MCP to Claude or ChatGPT, attach your file to the chat and ask, for example:
Build a new quiz from this spreadsheet. Each row is an answer. Connect the products in the Products column to each answer, and send customers who answer "Beginner" straight to the last question.
The assistant saves everything to a draft, so you can check the quiz in the Quiz Builder before you publish it.
