Brevo Integration

Connect Lantern to Brevo to create contacts from quiz takers, store their answers as contact attributes, add them to a list and trigger automations from the Completed_Lantern_Quiz event.

Written by Traian

Connecting Lantern with Brevo lets you send quiz response data straight into your Brevo account. Quiz takers become Brevo contacts, their answers are stored as contact attributes, and every completed quiz fires an event you can use in automations, segments and personalized campaigns.

This guide walks you through connecting the two platforms and mapping quiz data.

1. Generate an API key in Brevo

1.1. Log in to your Brevo account.

1.2. Open Settings (the gear icon at the top right), then go to SMTP & API and open the API keys & MCP tab.

1.3. Click Generate API key.

1.4. Give the key a clear name (e.g., Lantern) and click Generate.

1.5. Copy the key. It starts with xkeysib- and Brevo only shows it once.

Important: Brevo asks you to verify your account by phone before it issues the first API key. If you see a "One last step to secure your account" dialog, complete the verification and try again.

2. Find your list ID (optional)

If you want quiz takers added to a specific Brevo list, open Contacts, then Lists, and note the number in the ID column next to the list you want to use. If you skip this step, contacts are still created in Brevo, just not in any list.

3. Connect Brevo in Lantern

3.1. In your Lantern dashboard, go to Integrations.

3.2. Find the Brevo card and click Connect.

3.3. Paste your Brevo API key into the API Key field. If you want contacts added to a list, enter the list ID in the List ID field.

3.4. Click Connect. If the key (and the list ID, when provided) is valid, Lantern shows the integration as connected. You can update the key or the list, or disconnect, at any time.

Once connected, all active quizzes in your account automatically send eligible contact and quiz data to Brevo. There's no need to set up individual quiz connections.

Answers from questions set to Don't share or Don't store are not sent to Brevo. Learn more about Sensitive Data Controls.

4. Mapping question responses to attributes

Brevo stores quiz answers as contact attributes. Lantern only sends the answers of questions you map, and Brevo only keeps attributes that already exist in your account, so there are two steps:

4.1. In Brevo, go to Contacts, then Settings, then Contact attributes, and create a Normal attribute for each answer you want to store (e.g., SKINTYPE, type Text). Brevo attribute names are uppercase.

4.2. In the Lantern quiz editor, select the question, open Integration Settings in the right-hand panel and enter the attribute name in the Brevo ID field (e.g., SKINTYPE).

The quiz taker's first name and phone number, when collected on the opt-in page, are sent automatically to the built-in FIRSTNAME and SMS attributes.

5. How data flows to Brevo

When a quiz taker completes your quiz:

1. A contact is created (or updated, if the email already exists) in Brevo with:

- Email address

- Phone number (if collected), as the SMS attribute

- First name (if collected), as the FIRSTNAME attribute

- The mapped attributes from quiz answers shared with Brevo

- Membership of the list you chose, if you entered a list ID

- Marketing consent: if the quiz taker declines marketing on the opt-in page, the contact is created as blacklisted for email (and for SMS when a phone was collected), so Brevo won't send to them.

Important: Email and SMS marketing are enabled by default for every quiz. You can switch either off on the right-hand side of your opt-in page, under the Integration Settings drop-down.

2. An event called Completed_Lantern_Quiz is sent to Brevo, containing:

- The quiz taker's answers shared with Brevo, with the question text

- Recommended products (name, image URL, price, product URL, rank and score)

- Quiz session details, including a link back to the results page

You can view the attributes in the contact's profile in Brevo, and the events in the contact's Recent history.

6. Using quiz data in Brevo automations

Once quiz data is flowing into Brevo, you can:

- Segment contacts by quiz answers, using the mapped attributes

- Trigger an automation when the Completed_Lantern_Quiz event is received

- Personalize emails with the quiz answers and the recommended products from the event

Note: Brevo's event tracking is part of its Marketing Automation feature. It's included on Brevo's free plan with a contact limit; check your Brevo plan if events don't appear.

By following these steps, your Lantern quiz responses will feed directly into Brevo, ready for targeted marketing, personalization and automated campaigns.
