ActiveCampaign Integration

Send quiz takers to ActiveCampaign as contacts, with their answers in custom fields, a list subscription and a tag per quiz.

Written by Traian

Connecting Lantern with ActiveCampaign sends your quiz takers straight into your ActiveCampaign account. Each quiz taker becomes a contact, the answers you choose are stored in the contact's custom fields, the contact can be subscribed to a list, and every completed quiz adds a tag you can start automations from.

This guide walks you through connecting the two platforms and mapping quiz data.

1. Find your API URL and key in ActiveCampaign

1.1. Log in to your ActiveCampaign account.

1.2. Open Settings (the gear icon at the top right), then click Developer in the left menu.

1.3. Under API Access you'll see two values: URL and Key. Copy both. The URL looks like https://youraccount.api-us1.com and the key is a long string of letters and numbers.

Note: each ActiveCampaign user has their own key. Use the key of a user who will stay on the account, so the connection doesn't stop working when a teammate leaves.

2. Find your list ID (optional)

If you want quiz takers subscribed to a specific ActiveCampaign list, open Contacts, then Lists, and click the list you want to use. The list ID is the number after "listid=" in your browser's address bar. If you skip this step, contacts are still created in ActiveCampaign, just not subscribed to any list.

3. Connect ActiveCampaign in Lantern

3.1. In your Lantern dashboard, go to Integrations.

3.2. Find the ActiveCampaign card and click Connect.

3.3. Paste the URL into the API URL field and the key into the API Key field. If you want contacts subscribed to a list, enter the list ID in the List ID field.

3.4. Click Connect. Lantern checks the URL, the key and the list ID, and shows the integration as connected. You can update the key or the list, or disconnect, at any time.

Once connected, all active quizzes in your account automatically send eligible contact and quiz data to ActiveCampaign. There's no need to set up individual quiz connections.

Answers from questions set to Don't share or Don't store are not sent to ActiveCampaign. Learn more about Sensitive Data Controls.

4. Mapping question responses to custom fields

ActiveCampaign stores quiz answers in custom contact fields. ActiveCampaign doesn't create these fields by itself, and it doesn't know the Property IDs set up on your quiz questions. For every answer you want in ActiveCampaign, create a custom field there and tell Lantern which question fills it.

Take a question like "Which fruit do you like?" with the answers Apple, Banana and Cherry. Follow these two steps to set it up:

4.1. In ActiveCampaign, open Contacts, then Fields, and click Add Field (if ActiveCampaign first asks whether this should be a field, click Skip the quiz). Give the field a name such as Fruit and choose a field type (see below). If the type has options, add them and spell them exactly like the quiz answers: Apple, Banana, Cherry. After you save, the Fields list shows the field's personalization tag, for example %FRUIT%.

4.2. In the Lantern quiz editor, select the question, open Integration Settings in the right-hand panel and enter the personalization tag in the ActiveCampaign field box (e.g., %FRUIT%). You can also enter the field's number instead of the tag.

Publish the quiz once the mapping is in place. The question doesn't need a Property ID for this: for a choice question Lantern sends the answers the quiz taker picked, and for an open question the text they typed.

Which field type to choose:

  • Text Input works for every question type. A multiple choice question stores all selected answers separated by commas.

  • For a multiple choice question, a Checkbox or List Box field whose options match the answer labels exactly stores each selected answer as its own option, which is what you want for segments.

  • For a single choice question, a Dropdown or Radio Button field with the answer labels as options works the same way.

The quiz taker's first name and phone number, when collected on the opt-in page, are sent automatically to ActiveCampaign's built-in First Name and Phone fields.

5. How data flows to ActiveCampaign

When a quiz taker completes your quiz and leaves an email address, on the opt-in page or in the results page sign-up, a contact is created (or updated, if the email already exists) in ActiveCampaign with:

  • Email address

  • First name and phone number (if collected)

  • The mapped custom fields from quiz answers shared with ActiveCampaign

  • A subscription to the list you chose, if you entered a list ID

  • A tag named lantern-quiz- followed by the quiz's URL slug, for example lantern-quiz-skin-care-quiz

Marketing consent: the list subscription follows the quiz taker's choice. If they decline marketing on the opt-in page, or email marketing is switched off for the quiz, the contact is still created with the fields and the tag, but it is not subscribed to the list. Email marketing is enabled by default for every quiz; you can switch it off on the right-hand side of your opt-in page, under the Integration Settings drop-down.

What is not sent: ActiveCampaign doesn't receive an event with the recommended products, because its event tracking can't be connected through the API. Use the tag, the list subscription or a field change to start your automations instead.

6. Using quiz data in ActiveCampaign automations

Once quiz data is flowing into ActiveCampaign, you can:

  • Start an automation with the "Tag is added" trigger and the quiz's lantern-quiz- tag, so every quiz taker enters it right after finishing

  • Start an automation with the "Subscribes to a list" trigger on the list you chose

  • Build segments and conditions on the mapped custom fields, for example everyone whose Fruit is Banana

  • Personalize emails with the mapped fields using their personalization tags

By following these steps, your Lantern quiz responses will feed directly into ActiveCampaign, ready for targeted marketing, personalization and automated campaigns.
