Use Shopify collections to match products to quiz answers

Learn how to easily create collections by price range, product type, and tags, and keep your quizzes up-to-date.

Written by Ana Bunaiasu

Create collections that correspond to your quiz answers, then link them in Lantern instead of selecting products individually.

For example, an answer such as Puppy could match a collection containing products tagged for puppies. This is useful when several products share the same characteristics or you have a large catalogue.

Create a collection for a quiz answer

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products → Collections.

  2. Click Add collection in the top-right corner.

  3. Give the collection a recognisable name, such as Puppy food.

  4. Add conditions in the right-hand menu to select the products that belong in it.

  5. Save the collection and check that it contains the expected products.

Conditions can use attributes such as product category, tags, title, type, vendor, price, variant title and weight. Supported metafields can also be used when their definitions are configured for collection conditions.

You can add one condition or combine several. Choose whether products must meet all conditions or any condition, depending on the group you want to create.

If your Shopify admin still shows Collection type: select Smart to create a collection using conditions.

Examples of collections for quiz answers

Group products by a tag

For an answer such as Puppy, create a collection with the condition:

Product tag → is equal to → Puppy

Products with that tag are included in the collection.

Combine product type and tag conditions

For an answer such as Dry food for puppies, create a collection requiring both:

  • Product type → is equal to → Dry food

  • Product tag → is equal to → Puppy

Select all conditions so only products meeting both requirements are included.

Use a product metafield

If you store characteristics such as skin type or dietary suitability in metafields, you can use a supported metafield to group relevant products.

In the metafield definition, enable Use as a condition in collections, then select it when configuring your collection’s conditions.

Filtering by budget?

Use a budget question to filter matched products by the customer’s selected price range. See Product Matching for setup instructions.

Link the collection to your quiz

  1. Open your quiz in Lantern and go to the Products tab.

  2. Select the answer you want to match.

  3. Click Match Collections and select the relevant collection.

Lantern links the products in that collection to the answer. Collection matching works at the product level, rather than matching individual variants.

Repeat this for other answers where collections can simplify your matching.

Update linked collections

Shopify updates collection membership according to its conditions. Those changes are not automatically reflected in your Lantern quiz.

After adding products or changing collection membership:

  1. Open the Products tab in Lantern.

  2. Find the Collections card beneath the questions.

  3. Click Resync collections.

Collection limit: Lantern links up to 250 products per collection. Keep quiz collections within this limit so the products you expect can be matched.
