Integrating Lantern with Growave via Shopify Flow

Written by Ana Bunaiasu

You can connect Lantern quizzes with Growave using Shopify Flow to automatically reward customers with loyalty points when they complete a quiz. For example, you can award 100 points to eligible customers who finish your quiz.

Unlike loyalty apps that award points directly through Shopify Flow, Growave uses a customer metafield to trigger rewards. Shopify Flow updates the metafield when a quiz is completed, and Growave awards the points when the value matches your earning rule.

Before you start

You'll need:

  • Lantern installed, with the quiz you want to reward customers for.

  • Growave installed, on the Growth plan or higher. Growave's Customer metafield earning action is available from the Growth plan.

  • The Shopify Flow app installed in your Shopify store.

  • An Opt-in Page in your quiz that collects customers' email addresses. Learn how in Collect customer emails.

  • Create Customer in Shopify turned on in your quiz, so each quiz taker has a Shopify customer record. Step 1 shows you how.

  • A Shopify customer metafield with the namespace custom and the key lantern_qa_quiz_reward, using the Single line text type, as the completed value in this guide is text. Step 2 shows you how.

Shopify Flow updates the customer metafield and Growave awards the points, so both need a Shopify customer record to work with. Without an email address and a customer record, Shopify Flow has no customer to update and Growave has no one to give points to.

1. Configure Lantern

1.1. Open your quiz and go to Results Page → Order & Customer Tags.

1.2. Turn on Create Customer in Shopify. This creates a Shopify customer record for each quiz taker who enters their email address.

1.3. Turn on Send quiz completions to Shopify Flow. This lets Shopify Flow start a workflow each time a customer completes the quiz.

1.4. Publish your quiz so the new settings take effect.

2. Create the customer metafield

A customer metafield is a custom field stored on each customer's record in Shopify. In this setup, it records that the customer has completed the quiz, and Growave reads it to decide when to award points.

2.1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Metafields and metaobjects → Customers, then click Add definition.

2.2. Enter a name, such as Lantern QA Quiz Reward. The namespace is automatically set to custom, and the key is automatically generated from the name as lantern_qa_quiz_reward, resulting in the full identifier custom.lantern_qa_quiz_reward.

2.3. Set the type to Single line text with One value. This matches the text value completed used in this guide.

2.4. Click Save.

You can choose your own name. Whatever you choose, use exactly the same namespace and key in Shopify Flow and in Growave.

3. Set up Shopify Flow

3.1. Open Shopify Flow and create a new workflow.

3.2. For the trigger, choose Lantern's Quiz Completed (with customer) trigger.

3.3. (Optional) Add a Condition so the workflow only runs for a specific quiz. Set Quiz id to Equal to your quiz ID, for example pets-best-bite. You can find the Quiz ID in the Lantern quiz builder under More Integrations → Zapier. If you want to reward customers for completing any of your quizzes, skip this step.

3.4. We recommend adding a Wait action of about 60 seconds before the update action. This gives Shopify time to finish creating the customer record before the workflow updates the metafield.

3.5. Add Shopify's Update customer metafield action. Select the customer metafield you created, for example custom.lantern_qa_quiz_reward, and set its value to completed.

3.6. Turn on the workflow.

4. Configure Growave

4.1. In Growave, go to Rewards → Points → Ways to earn, then click Add ways to earn.

4.2. Under Online store, select Customer metafield.

4.3. Enter the same metafield you created in Shopify: set Metafield namespace to custom and Metafield key to lantern_qa_quiz_reward. For Metafield value type, select Single line text field.

4.4. Set Metafield condition to Equals and Metafield value to completed. Growave awards points when the customer's metafield matches this value.

4.5. Set Reward to Points and enter 100 in the Point Value field. You can choose a different number of points.

4.6. Under Status, select Enabled, then click Save.

Each Customer metafield earning rule awards points only once per customer, for life. Growave sets this limit and it can't be changed, so a customer who retakes the quiz won't earn the points again from the same rule.

Growave doesn't always award points straight away. It processes earning actions in the background, so points can take some time to appear in the customer's account.

5. Test the integration

5.1. Complete your quiz using a test email address on the Opt-in Page.

5.2. In your Shopify admin, open the test customer's record and scroll to the Metafields section. Find the metafield you created, for example, Lantern QA Quiz Reward, and confirm that its value is completed.

5.3. In Growave, open the test customer's points history and check that the points were added. If they haven't appeared yet, allow some time for Growave's background processing and check again.

Troubleshooting

  • The customer doesn't appear in Shopify: Check that your quiz has an Opt-in Page that collects email addresses and that the customer entered one. Make sure Create Customer in Shopify is turned on under Results Page → Order & Customer Tags.

  • The metafield is empty or has the wrong value: Check that Send quiz completions to Shopify Flow is turned on in Lantern and that your workflow is turned on. If it includes a Quiz id condition, make sure it matches the ID of the quiz the customer completed. Check the workflow’s Runs history for errors, then confirm that the metafield namespace, key and value match exactly in Shopify Flow and Growave—for example, custom.lantern_qa_quiz_reward and completed.

  • The metafield is correct but points haven't appeared: Allow some time for Growave’s background processing, then check the customer’s points history again.

  • The customer still didn't receive points: Check that the Customer metafield earning action is enabled under Rewards → Points → Ways to earn and that your Growave plan includes it. Under Rewards → Settings → Rewards availability, check whether customer eligibility restrictions are enabled. Make sure the customer has any required allowed tag and no forbidden tag. Also check whether they have already received this rule’s reward, which can only be awarded once per customer, for life.
