With the Emailable integration, Lantern checks every email a customer types in your quiz with Emailable, an email verification service, before the email is saved. A customer whose address can't receive email is asked to correct it, and a likely typo such as gmial.com comes with a one-click fix. That keeps dead and mistyped addresses out of your email tool and your Shopify customers.
You need an Emailable account. Each check uses one Emailable credit, which you buy from Emailable (new accounts get 250 free). See Emailable pricing.
Step 1: Create a public API key in Emailable
1.1 Log in to Emailable, click API in the top menu, then click New Key under API Keys.
1.2 Choose a Public key, not a Private one. A public key is made for websites: it can only check emails, only from the domains you list, and only up to 10 different emails per customer a day, so nobody can use it to spend your credits. A private key would be visible to everyone who takes your quiz, so Lantern doesn't accept one.
1.3 Add your store's domain as a trusted domain, for example yourstore.com. Subdomains such as www.yourstore.com are included. If your store doesn't have its own domain, add its .myshopify.com address instead.
1.4 Don't set up a captcha for this key in Emailable. Lantern's check can't answer a captcha, so with one, every email goes through without being checked.
1.5 Create the key and copy it. Public keys start with live_pk_.
Step 2: Connect Emailable in Lantern
2.1 In Lantern, open Integrations, find Emailable under Marketing and click Connect.
2.2 Paste your key into Public API Key.
2.3 Click Connect. The card shows Connected.
Lantern checks that you pasted a public key, but it can't try the key without spending one of your credits, so test it once yourself (see Check that it works below). There are no settings to change per quiz: once connected, every quiz in your store checks emails.
What your customers see
The check runs when a customer submits their email on the Optin Page or in the Email sign-up on the Results page:
An address that can't receive email: the quiz shows This email address can’t receive emails. Please check it. and the customer can't continue with that address. If your Optin Page lets customers skip the email, they can still skip it.
A likely typo: the quiz shows Did you mean [email protected]? Clicking the suggested address puts it in the field. The suggestion shows once: if the customer submits their own address again and Emailable didn't call it undeliverable, it's accepted, since some unusual addresses are real.
Everything else is accepted as before: good addresses, addresses Emailable rates as risky or unknown (for example company domains that accept any address), and any time Emailable doesn't answer within 5 seconds, refuses the key or your account is out of credits. A problem on Emailable's side never stops a customer.
Both messages are part of your quiz text, translated into every language Lantern supports, and you can reword them like any other button or message. See Change the language or the wording of your quiz.
Credits
Each different email a customer submits uses one credit. Submitting the same address again during the same visit doesn't use another one.
Emails are only checked when a customer submits them, never while they type.
When your Emailable account runs out of credits, emails are accepted without a check, so keep an eye on your balance in Emailable.
Check that it works
Open your quiz on your store, the way customers see it, go to the email step and type an address with a typo, for example [email protected]. You should see the Did you mean message. In Emailable, the check appears under API Usage on the API page.
The preview inside the quiz editor runs on Lantern's own website, which isn't one of your trusted domains, so emails typed there are never checked.
Emailable and the bot check
Emailable catches real people's typos and addresses that don't exist. To keep out sign-ups made by bots, also turn on Check for bots before saving quiz emails. The two work together.
Disconnect Emailable
In Lantern, open Integrations, click Edit on the Emailable card, then Disconnect. Quizzes opened after that stop checking emails.
