With the Zoho CRM integration, quiz takers who leave their email are added to Zoho CRM as leads, or update their contact if they're already a customer of yours. Each completion also adds a note with their answers, their recommended products and a link to their results, so your team sees what every customer told the quiz.
The integration works with every Zoho CRM edition, including the Free edition, and with Zoho accounts in every data center except China.
Step 1: Connect Zoho CRM in Lantern
Zoho CRM doesn't use API keys. Instead, you sign in with Zoho once and allow Lantern to add leads and notes to your CRM.
1.1 In Lantern, open Integrations, find Zoho CRM under Marketing and click Connect.
1.2 In the window that opens, click Connect Zoho CRM. Zoho's sign-in page opens in a new tab.
1.3 Sign in with a Zoho CRM user who can create and edit leads and contacts, for example the account's admin. Zoho lists what Lantern asks for: leads, contacts, notes, your field list, tags, and your user and company name. Click Accept.
1.4 Zoho sends you back to Lantern, and the Zoho CRM window shows Connected with your company name and the email you signed in with.
Lantern acts as the user who signed in, so leads and notes it adds show that user as their creator. Once connected, every active quiz in your store sends quiz takers to Zoho CRM, with no settings to change per quiz.
What Zoho CRM receives
When a customer completes a quiz and leaves their email, either on the Optin Page or in the Email sign-up on the Results page, Lantern looks the email up in Zoho CRM:
If a contact has that email, Lantern updates the contact.
If not, but a lead has it, Lantern updates the lead.
Otherwise, Lantern creates a new lead with the email, the name and phone from the Optin Page, and the Lead Source
Lantern quiz.
Zoho CRM requires a Last Name on every lead. When the quiz doesn't ask for a last name, Lantern writes [not provided]. If the customer takes the quiz again with their last name, the real name replaces the placeholder. If your lead layout makes other fields required, like Company, Lantern fills them with the same placeholder. Lantern never creates contacts and never converts leads.
Zoho keeps Lantern quiz as the Lead Source even though it isn't one of the field's choices. To filter or build views on it, add Lantern quiz to the Lead Source pick list in Zoho CRM's settings, under Modules and Fields, then Leads.
Every completion also adds two things to the lead or contact:
A note called Completed Lantern quiz followed by the quiz name. It lists every question with the customer's answer, the products the quiz recommended and a link to their results page. A customer who takes the quiz twice gets two notes, one per completion.
A tag for the quiz:
lantern-followed by the quiz's URL handle, for examplelantern-skin-care-quiz. Zoho allows tags of up to 25 characters, so a long handle is shortened at a whole word:crochet-pattern-quizbecomeslantern-crochet-pattern.
Saving answers in Zoho CRM fields
The note holds every answer with no setup. If you'd also like answers in their own fields, for reports, views or workflows, create the fields in Zoho CRM. Lantern fills fields that exist and never creates fields in your CRM.
Lantern matches fields by Question Property ID, a short name for a question's answer that you set in the question's right-hand panel in the quiz editor. You can read more about Property IDs in How to use customer answers in Lantern quizzes. A question with the Property ID skin_type fills the field labeled Skin Type or skin_type. Capital letters don't matter, and spaces and other characters count as underscores, so Skin-Type matches too.
To create a field:
In Zoho CRM, open Setup (the gear icon), then Modules and Fields, then Leads, and open the layout.
Drag a field type into the layout. Single Line takes any answer. A Pick List keeps the answer even when it isn't one of its choices, and a multiple choice answer fills a Multi-Select pick list with each answer as its own value. Number and Checkbox fields only take answers that fit them.
Use the Property ID as the Field Label and save the layout.
Create the same field in Contacts if you'd like answers saved for people who are already contacts.
When Zoho refuses a value, for example text in a Number field, Lantern saves the record without that answer and keeps the rest. The answer is still in the note.
Lantern also fills these fields when you create them, with exactly these labels:
Lantern Quiz (Single Line): the URL handle of the quiz they took, for example skin-care-quiz.
Lantern Results URL (URL): a link to their results page, so your emails can send them back to their recommendations.
Lantern Recommended Products (Multi Line): the names of the products on their results page, separated by commas.
Lantern Completed At (Date/Time): when they completed the quiz. It changes every time, so a workflow can run again when a customer retakes the quiz.
Workflows
Zoho CRM sends follow-up emails through workflow rules, on editions that include them. In Zoho CRM, open Setup, then Workflow Rules under Automation, and create a rule on the Leads module. A few ways to start one from the quiz:
New leads: run the rule when a lead is created, with the condition Lead Source is
Lantern quiz. One quiz: run the rule when a lead is created or edited, with the condition that its tags contain the quiz's tag.
Every completion: run the rule when Lantern Completed At is modified, so contacts and returning customers are included too. Create the same rule on the Contacts module.
In the rule's conditions, use the answer fields to send each customer the email that fits their answers. Take the quiz once yourself with your own email to see a lead arrive before you build the rule.
Marketing consent
Lantern only sends customers who can be emailed:
A lead or contact is sent when the customer left an email and Subscribe to email marketing is on for the quiz.
Nothing is sent when the customer declined marketing. If your Optin Page shows an optional consent checkbox and the customer leaves it unticked, they aren't sent.
Nothing is sent for a customer who left only a phone number, because Lantern finds leads and contacts by email.
The switch is on the Optin Page: open Integration Settings on the right-hand side. It's on by default, and the section appears once Zoho CRM is connected. Lantern never changes Email Opt Out or any other consent field in Zoho CRM. To set up the Optin Page and its consent checkbox, see Collect customer emails.
Disconnecting and troubleshooting
To disconnect, open Integrations, click Edit on the Zoho CRM card and click Disconnect. Lantern stops sending customers and gives up its access to your CRM. Your leads, contacts and notes stay in Zoho CRM.
If the window shows Reconnect required, Zoho no longer accepts Lantern's access. This happens when the user who connected leaves your Zoho account or removes Lantern from their Zoho account's connected apps. Nothing is sent until you click Reconnect Zoho CRM and sign in again, ideally with a user who'll stay.
If the Zoho sign-in page shows an error instead of the Accept button, close the tab and click Connect Zoho CRM again. The link Lantern opens is valid for one hour.
Good to know
Sensitive answers are not shared. Answers to questions set to Don't share or Don't store are never sent to Zoho CRM, in fields or in the note. See How Sensitive Data Controls Work.
Test submissions are included. Completing the quiz in Preview with an email adds that person to Zoho CRM too.
API limits: Zoho CRM limits how many API calls an account makes per day. Lantern uses about five per quiz taker, so the Free edition's daily allowance covers around 1,000 quiz takers a day, and paid editions cover far more.
Zapier still works. If you'd rather build your own automation, the Zapier integration can also send quiz takers to Zoho CRM.
