Discount codes are a great incentive tool to boost your quiz conversion or even your optin rate. In Lantern we offer a variety of ways in which you can use discount codes that allows you to choose the best method for your quiz type or purpose.

Automatic Discount Codes

If you want to offer an automated discount to all quiz takers that end up purchasing something as a result of quiz interaction you can now do that seamlessly by using our Discount functionality. You need to be on the Results Page and in the right hand-side menu you can navigate to Discount where you can paste a code you already have available in your store. We recommend customizing the text on the Results Page to let customers know that an automatic discount will be applied to anything they will add to cart to give then an extra incentive to purchase.

Creating a dedicated discount code

If you don’t have a discount code you want to offer ready to use, you can create a dedicated discount code for the quiz from your Shopify Admin area under Discounts. You can click Create discount to get started.

Next you will need to choose the type of offer you want to use and in this case we will go for the Amount off products since we want to offer a discount to specific products or collections of products we know we are using in the quiz as product matches. Depending on your quiz you may want to offer something different or even a general discount that applies to the entire catalogue of products.

We can start by adding a custom discount code to use on the results page such as 10OFFALL which will be a 10% discount code not automatic discount that applies to specific products and we can choose the products we include in the quiz.

Before saving this discount you can set-up a few more options for your discount depending on the needs of your store or other offers that are active. In our example we have no minimum purchase requirements, we want it to apply to all customers, there is no maximum discount uses since we want to incentivize quiz takers to add as many products as they want but we don’t want it to be combined with other offers in the store. So after choosing the right options for your store you can click save discount on the bottom right corner and the code is now available.

With your code now live you can copy it and paste it under the Discount section in the right hand side menu on the Results Page.

Quiz Page Discount Codes

Discount codes can be added on any quiz page no matter the type by using Content Blocks. This can allow you to give very targeted discounts for different cohorts of quiz takers such as a special code for cat owners and another code for dog owners.

Let’s add a content block on the input page asking for a person’s cat name.

In the content block we can add some text to introduce the code to quiz takers and check the Include a discount option. Under the Discount Code you need to input a valid discount code. If you don’t have a discount code ready to use you need to create one first using the step by step guide above on how to generate a new discount code.

We can further customize the text to make it a Header3 and align it in the middle, add a cat image in this same block with a Desktop width of only 70% on top to make sure all this content is aligned neatly together on top of the input question.

For each discount code you can also customize the look of the code itself, position and font size. We can choose some options that would match the yellow themes cat photo in this case. You also have the option to either display the code, which can have more of a visual effect for users since they can click on it to copy paste when they checkout. Also you can choose to apply the discount automatically without the need for this extra step from the users. Usually you can choose one or the other since there is no practical reason to have them together.

Note that if you want to further customize the look of the discount code badge you can do so by adding custom code by browsing to the Theme Settings section under Custom CSS to apply and use the class .discount-code-badge.

In this example we are applying a custom border radius of 15px.

Now the code is ready and you can preview it in the quiz editor and in the live quiz where you can test the copy functionality to make sure that upon clicking on the code a confirmation check icon shows.

Results Page Discount Codes

You can display a special discount code that quiz takers can copy and paste from the Results Page by using the Add a Dynamic Content Bock button anywhere on the page.

In this case you can apply different discount codes for different variants in Dynamic Content Blocks based on specific product matches. Let’s use an example where we have different results variants depending on the age of a quiz taker’s dog. To learn more about how to use Dynamic Content Blocks please check out help article here.

The first variant targets a normal weight puppy with custom text and product matches and now we can add a dedicated discount by checking the Include a discount option.

Similarly to how you would set-up an automated discount code you can paste a discount code under the Discount Code input which needs to be a valid discount code you’ve generated in Shopify. If you don’t have one already you need to generate one, you can follow the step by step guide on how to generate one above.

The main options are choosing to display or not the display code in the block that can be copied by quiz takers and copy-pasted when they checkout. You can also choose to apply it automatically by ticking the Apply discount automatically which means when they checkout any product the code will automatically be applied. Note most times it can be more effective to show the code to your customers so they can copy-paste it themselves.

At the bottom of the discount creation feature we have a few options for customizations such as the placement where you you want your discount code to show in the Dynamic Content Block Variant, the font size for the discount and the color for the text and background of the discount section.

You can now preview your Discount Code live on the Results page and see how by clicking the icon next to the code will copy the code and confirm that with a check mark icon after it is done like so:

Discount Codes as a Reward

On the Results Page

One important feature of the discount code is offering it as a reward post optin for either phone numbers or e-mails. One easy implementation would be if you already have Dynamic content blocks that you show on your results page where you don’t necessarily incentivize people with a discount code. You may, in this case, want to show a discount only if that customer has given their e-mail or phone number in your quiz. You need to simply check the Optin Reward option and save.

Note that the code will by default be shown in the quiz editor but live only if an e-mail or phone number was given.

In quiz pages

You can use reward codes in the quiz pages as well but you will need to make sure that the quiz page on which you will show the discount code with the condition for checked is positioned after the optin page. The capture page can be customized with text to suggest a reward like so:

In this case we will use a Transition screen right after the email capture page before getting to the Results page which will only display the code if they submitted something on the optin page.

You could also customize the entire page depending on an optin submission which can be done by using the Skip/Show conditions on the transition page and have a dedicated transition page depending on the 2 possible outcomes, a submission or no submission on the optin page. This can allow you to use regular settings for displaying the discount code and only show the page if someone gave their e-mail or phone number using the right hand side menu on the transition screen page. To learn more about how you can use the Skip/Show conditions please check our help article here.
