With Lantern, you can map specific product variants (e.g., size, color, shade) directly in your quiz so results point to the exact item a customer needs. This is ideal for foundation shade matching, mattress size recommenders, apparel sizing, and similar use cases where you need to present a precise, personalized recommendation.

How variant matching works

When you want your quiz to recommend a specific product variant (such as a size, colour, or style), each variant must be matched individually to the relevant quiz answers.

There is an important difference between matching a product and matching a variant:

  • Matching a product applies match points to the whole product. All variants are treated the same.

  • Matching a variant applies match points only to that exact size, colour, or style.

Imagine a T-shirt store where customers can choose both colour and size in the quiz.

If a customer selects:

  • Red for colour

  • Small for size

To make sure the quiz recommends the correct Red – Small T-shirt, you should:

  1. Match all Small T-shirt variants to the “Small” answer.

  2. Match all Red T-shirt variants to the “Red” answer.

By doing this, the Red – Small variant receives match points from both answers.

This increases its match score and ensures it is prioritised in the quiz results.

How to match variants

To start adding product variants for each answer click Match Variants. This will open up a list of all the products with variants in your store.

You can filter products by title using the search bar, or use Add filter (e.g., Categories, Collections, Types, Tags, Vendors). Alternatively, type tag:xyz in the search bar—replacing xyz with the actual product tag—to filter by tags.

In the Select products popup, it shows 2 options to filter products: the search bar is used to filter by tag, containing the text tag:dog food or to use Add filter (e.g., Categories, Collections, Types, Tags, Vendors)
