Change the language or the wording of your quiz

Set a quiz's language, reword any button or message for one quiz, or change the built-in text for every quiz in a language.

Every quiz has two kinds of text. The questions, answers and page content are yours: you type them in the quiz editor in any language. The fixed interface text (the Start button, "Next question", "No thanks", "View details", "No matching products found", error messages and so on) comes from Lantern, in the language the quiz is set to. This article covers that second kind: how to pick the language, how to reword a phrase for one quiz, and how to change the text for every quiz in a language.

Set the quiz language

Open the quiz in the editor (Quizzes tab, pencil icon), click Theme settings at the bottom left, and pick the language in the Language dropdown.

Lantern has built-in text for 61 languages, so a French quiz shows French buttons and messages the moment you pick French, nothing to fill in. The language also sets right-to-left layout for languages such as Arabic and Hebrew, how dates and prices are formatted, and which translation of your product titles Shopify sends to the results page. The dropdown lists every language Lantern has built-in text for, plus any language you added in Translations. To add a language that isn't listed, or to change a language's text for every quiz at once, use the Translations link under the dropdown (see "Change the text for every quiz in a language" below).

The language applies to the whole quiz. To offer the same quiz in another language, make a copy (Quizzes tab, duplicate icon), set its language, translate its questions and answers, and publish it under its own link. If you have Lantern connected to Claude or ChatGPT, you can ask it to create the translated copy for you, for example: "Create a Spanish version of the Wine quiz as a separate quiz. Keep the structure, settings and product recommendations, translate all content into Spanish."

Reword a button or message for one quiz

In the editor, click Quiz text at the bottom left, under Theme settings. The panel lists every fixed phrase the quiz shows, grouped by where it appears: Navigation, Question steps, Email page, Results page, Error pages. Each field shows the current text as a hint. Type over it to change that phrase for this quiz only; the preview updates as you type, and the change is saved automatically. Clear a field to go back to the built-in text.

For example, to make the email page button say "See my pairings" instead of "Submit & get results", open Quiz text, open the Email page section, and type the new label into Submit email button. Then publish the quiz to make the change live.

The buttons on individual pages (Next question, Finish, Submit, Add to cart, Add all to cart, View more) can also be changed from that page's own settings under Button Design, as before. Both ways work; Quiz text is the one place that has every phrase.

Change the text for every quiz in a language

If your store has several quizzes in the same language and you want them all to use your own wording, open the Lantern dashboard in your Shopify admin and go to the Translations tab. Every language with built-in text is already listed, marked "Built-in"; use the search box to find yours. Open it and change only the phrases you want; the built-in text is shown as the hint in every field, and anything you leave empty keeps it. Save, and the language shows "Customized". Every quiz set to that language picks up your wording right away, no change needed in the quizzes themselves. A quiz's own Quiz text entries still win over the saved language, so one quiz can differ from the rest.

Add language is for a language Lantern has no built-in text for yet. Pick it, fill in the phrases, and it appears in the editor's Language dropdown. To reword a single quiz, use Quiz text in the editor instead.

Good to know

Changes in Quiz text and Theme settings are saved to the quiz's draft; publish the quiz (the Publish step at the top of the editor) to make them live. Changes in the Translations tab apply to live quizzes right away. Right-to-left languages lay the whole quiz out from right to left automatically. If you want to change how a phrase looks rather than what it says, see How to add custom CSS to your quiz.
