How Lantern handles UTM Tracking Parameters

Written by Wendy

You can add UTM tracking parameters to your quiz URLs to help track and analyse your quiz traffic.

Lantern also automatically preserves existing advertising attribution. If a customer arrives at your store through an ad with UTM parameters or an ad click ID, Lantern carries those parameters through when they click a product link from their quiz results.

How Lantern handles existing tracking parameters

If a customer arrives with existing ad tracking, Lantern gives those parameters priority. UTM parameters configured inside the Lantern app are not added alongside them.

For example, if a customer arrives through a Google, Meta, TikTok or Microsoft ad, the original campaign tracking is carried through to product links. This prevents Lantern's own tracking parameters from replacing the campaign that originally brought the customer to your store.

This includes the following parameters:

utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content, utm_id, fbclid, gclid, gbraid, wbraid, ttclid and msclkid.

A click ID on its own is enough. For example, if a customer arrives with only fbclid, Lantern will carry fbclid through to the product links and will not add the UTM parameters configured in Lantern.

If the customer does not arrive with any of these parameters, Lantern uses the UTM parameters you have configured for each quiz inside the app.

If Use URL tracking parameters is turned off, Lantern will not add its own UTM parameters. However, any existing ad parameters will still be carried through because they belong to the customer's original visit.

Lantern remembers the original ad parameters for the browser tab. This means a customer can arrive on your homepage through an ad, browse your store and open the quiz later, and the original ad attribution will still be carried through.

Results Page redirects: Redirect URLs work slightly differently. If you have manually added UTM parameters to your redirect URL, Lantern keeps them and also adds the customer's existing ad parameters. This can result in duplicate parameters, such as two utm_campaign values. If you run ads to your quiz, we recommend not manually adding UTM parameters to your redirect URL.

How to Add UTM Tracking Parameters

1. Enable URL Tracking
Navigate to the Results Page of your quiz and access the URLs drop-down menu to enable URL tracking parameters.

Image showing the 'Use URL tracking parameters' checkbox enabled, found under the URLs dropdown in the right-hand side menu of the Results Page settings in the quiz builder.

2. Set Parameters and UTM types
You can add any URL tracking parameters using the format:

utm_[UTM type]=[UTM value]

There are a number of UTM types that you can use in tracking for various properties and they follow the same pattern and wording for the UTM type such that they can be identified correctly by the traffic platform, those being:

utm_campaign

Used to identify the name of your campaign which in this case could be your quiz name.

utm_medium

Used to identify a specific medium where traffic could be coming from, for example if you have a version of a quiz in French and one in English you may set up a specific name to differentiate between the 2.

utm_source

Used to identify a specific source for the visit which could be set for different versions of the quiz that such as a version that you use in paid marketing from different platforms such as Facebook ads or Blogs etc.

utm_term

It can be used as a campaign term for keyword related PPC activities depending on your current set-up

utm_content

It can be used to identify how different placements can drive traffic. For example you can have different copies of the quiz for each type of placement in which you can use this UTM to differentiate between a pop-up quiz, embedded quiz or buttons at different placements in your store.

For example to track views from a specific quiz you can use the campaign UTM that uses the name of your quiz as a UTM value:

utm_campaign=find-my-perfect-pet-food

Pro Tip!

If you want to use the value that represents the actual slug of your quiz you can use as a value for the UTM parameter {slug} like so:

utm_campaign={slug}

3. Multiple Parameters

If you need to add multiple parameters, separate them with the sign & . For example, to track visits from a specific quiz, you might use the following 2 UTMs combined to give you the source of the visit as coming from Lantern and the campaign to be path of your specific quiz:

utm_source=lantern&utm_campaign=find-my-perfect-pet-food

Built-in Parameters

Historically, Lantern provided two built-in tracking parameters:

  • utm_source: Originally set to ‘Lantern’

  • utm_campaign: Also set to ‘Lantern’

These parameters are still available and can be customized to better align with your tracking needs.

By utilizing UTM parameters, you can gain detailed insights into the effectiveness of various marketing campaigns and traffic sources leading to your quiz.
